This year CEOS is completing 28 years of exciting partnership and has played key role, since its formation in 1984, in fomenting international coordination on space based earth observation. This effort has enhanced contributions in an organized manner from CEOS to the Group on Earth Observation (GEO) to shape and formulate governmental policies for making Earth a better and habitable place for the human being. This is made possible through engagement of space agencies and international organizations, in amalgamation of activities related to satellite operation and data sharing leading to complementary and compatible data products, formats, services and applications. Initiatives such as GLAM, GFOI, FCT, GSICS, etc., are the pointers to this success story.
This year, ISRO has had the opportunity to shoulder responsibility as CEOS Chair. It has strived to take forward CEOS guiding principles and agenda by engaging successfully various partner agencies in teleconferences, presence at Rio+20, EO handbook, extension of the Self-Study Document, etc. Days have passed and soon we will be meeting to take stock of accomplishments as well as handing over the baton to the next CEOS Chair agency.
As is customary, ISRO, being the current CEOS host organization in 2012, will conduct CEOS Plenary during 24-27 October 2012 in Bengaluru, India. We anticipate a number of side and preparatory meetings ahead of Plenary on 24th October and the Plenary itself will take place on 25th and 26th October. We plan to have visit to major tourist sites near Bengaluru on 27th October. We look forward to welcoming CEOS colleagues to India and encourage every CEOS Agency to be represented at this year’s Plenary meeting. We anticipate a full and productive agenda to review progress on CEOS’s 2012 accomplishments and to plan CEOS activities for the coming years. A draft agenda is uploaded in this website and the other details will follow in the coming weeks.
Looking forward to seeing you in 26th CEOS Plenary at Bengaluru.
Best regards,
(A.S. Kiran Kumar)
